After using my brain all week - something totally different.

I created this initially as a Toy (god forbid) now it's a pride and joy and if the kids touch it - death would be a better option :). So far I estimate I have spent around just £250 on this in materials, kits etc. and it's taken me about 18 months.

This is RAF Alexander (fictitious of course) but is meant to be an RAF Blenheim base during WWII supported by a flight of RAF Hurricanes.

Latest projects are a Farm House and Pub so come back later for those pics I'll try and improve the lighting to improve the pics.

The pictures below show a few of the scenes I have created so far.

Flight Crew Rest Area
Flight Crew Rest Area
Comprises Mizzen Hut, Tent, Refreshment Wagon and in far left corner Anderson Shelter. All constructed from resin or cardboard
Air Crew Rest Area (2)
Air Crew Rest Area (2)
Better view of the Refreshment wagon. All the figures are in 1:72 scale and built from German kits in order to get the poses right (the Germans know how to make good models). In the foreground a group are playing cards.
Depot Scene
Depot Scene
Mizzen storage huts all are lighted made from cardboard with imitation corrugated iron. The figures come from different kits but have been melted and reformed in some cases.
RAF Base Entrance
RAF Base Entrance
Lookout tower made from an Italeri plastic kit as is the security barrier. Motorbike outriders from Hornby kit. On the right is part of the railway line that runs part way through the whole layout.
Emergency Field Hospital
Emergency Field Hospital
Most parts collected from Airfix. One German fighter has been part destroyed and decorated to imitate smoke escaping (bottom left). Note the small stretchers.
Church
Church
This took some real work approx. 20 hours to produce a burial scene. All the parts made from plastic. The figures (Preiser) came from Germany. The church is a Wills kit and the stained glass windows were made from clear plastic and coloured with OHP permanent marker pens.
Blenheim & Hurricane
Blenheim & Hurricane
Ready for take-off. Gives an idea of the overall 8' x 4' layout
Scamble Hut
Scamble Hut
A group of airman await their flying orders. Alll parts hand made in order to achieve the relaxed atmosphere of a pilot relaxing in his deck chair listening to the wireless. The hut behind has an initation small brazier which has been lighted.
Anti Aircraft Battery
Anti Aircraft Battery
Made from Airfix kit but the sandbag surround is hand sculptured. Just behind is an Airfix control tower purchased at a car boot sale for 50p.
Blenheim Take-Off
Blenheim Take-Off
At the end of the runway I have tried to imitate the lift off from one of the aircraft. I am working on this to make it more realistic.
Birds Eye View
Birds Eye View
Top right are two aircraft hangars made from polystyrene coving. Both are lighted. In the front are various buildings including the Control Tower.
Depot
Depot
First of two petrol storage tanks made from a Hornby kit. On the right is an RAF Lysander waiting to be boarded by a spy destined for France.
Aircrew Rest Centre
Aircrew Rest Centre
As you can tell my favourite part of the layout. Measuring about 1' x 1' it took me around 30 hours to get it right - and I'm still not happy.
Fuel Storage Tanks
Fuel Storage Tanks
Fuel depot made from toilet roll tubes took about 15 hours of work. Pipes leading to & from the tanks made from the off cuts of airfix figures. The camouflage netting is made from an old hair net (not mine) and BBQ skewers. In the foreground is a model from the Airfix RAF Recovery set. Just to it's left a hornby Skaledale Pill Box with machine gun crew on the roof - this needs finishing off.
